The Cucumber Test: This is where kukumba begins

It all started with a specific problem. We were looking for an accessory that didn't exist – so we developed it ourselves. This first product became the starting point for everything else. That's how kukumba was born.

From naming chaos to kukumba

Before kukumba, there were countless names in notebooks and lists – often generic acronyms with the "deepest possible meaning." Unfortunately, none of them were memorable because none of the names created a mental image.

The breakthrough didn't come from marketing, but from the workshop – specifically, from the 3D printer.

With the first prototypes made of ASA, we regularly struggled with warping, as ASA is a demanding material and printing it is not trivial. Some prints came out of the printer so warped that they looked more like a cucumber than a precision component for a vehicle. The standard phrase was quickly found:

"What a cucumber."

Eventually, it became a fixed term: every fit check, every new iteration was another "cucumber test" – until it became a component that fit perfectly. That's how we went from the cucumber test to Cucumber to kukumba – a bit quirky, a bit nerdy, but easy to remember.

What's next?

kukumba continues to grow step by step. Because traveling well is about more than just getting from A to B. Looking ahead, we are expanding the range of existing categories and developing the webshop towards travel, camping, and vanlife – with accessories that make your car ready for everyday life and adventure.

If you'd like to follow along, feel free to stick around and check back often – we're constantly building, testing, and improving, and we only put things online that we truly stand behind.

Kukumba Matata and eat more cucumbers.
